Day: who knows!

on

I left my computer in Canberra so I’m trying to post this from my phone which is a bit of a challenge.I don’t even know what day we are up to. To make it worse its a replacement phone (dodgy) while my new one is on order. I thought we were only going to be in Wagga for a few days…

Unfortunately we’ve had a bit of a set-back. Now, as i said to the kids, no need to worry or panic, they did tell us we would no doubt have a few setbacks.

On the weekend I noticed Dave had a small cut on his nose. Unfortunately this has turned nasty and large. I called the Canberra oncology staff yesterday morning to see what they thought we should do, and they recommended we get some antibiotics. So we headed out to see a GP at Kapooka hospital. The Doctor took some blood tests, gave Dave some oral antibiotics and sent us home.

The Doctor rang this morning and said the blood test results weren’t good, so we headed back out to Kapooka.

I sat patiently in the car while Dave saw the doctor. Apparently its not right on army base to hold your husbands hand seeing the doctor! After about an hour he came back out and said that he had to be admitted.

Apparently the white blood cells are now high (not sure how that actually happens during Chemo) and since last week they were at Zero (yes really zero!) they wanted to get some IV penicillin in to him quickly.

He was then settled into a private room, with views over the Kapooka hills no less, Canula inserted, lunch served and as I was leaving the IV antibiotics were being set up.

The nurse that is looking after him is already proving to be a gem, organising for my transport, being very kind, making sure everyone was gowning up etc. They definitely don’t want him catching any more infections.

I have come home to get some clothes and toiletries for him and will head back shortly. Because I’m not a serving member and i don’t have a ‘spouse pass’, I have to be escorted from the gate to the Hospital. The ambulance escorted me out a little while ago, not sure who’s going to escort me in.

I’ll post again tonight if there’s any change, but hopefully those antibiotics will kick in quickly and he will be all good. Hes feeling pretty horrible apart from this anyway, so i hope he gets some sleep.

This is a pic that I took form my car while i was waiting – I should have taken one of the nice view out the hospital room window!
