Day 47

on

I’m safely home and ensconced in my warm house. With my favourite son, my favourite dog, my favourite bath, my favourite pillow, my favourite bed, my favourite… well the list goes on. I do like my home.

Cat number one was pleased to see me!

I arrived in Collingullie yesterday right on midday as Will and his team ran on to the field. They played well and had a pretty easy win. Will played back-pocket and full-back, marking their star player, who has recently returned from retirement into their second grade team. Will didn’t get a lot of ball but apparently he did a good job marking this person as he was named on the best list. It wasn’t too cold so I sat and watched the game out of the car, and very much enjoyed my hot pie at the half time break. I saw one of the girls from work whose sons play for the opposition and got a big cuddle from her – I like that people are reading this blog and know what I need – thanks Rachel 🙂

Today has been very quiet. Will went out for Breakfast so I have just lazed around and only ventured out briefly to grocery shop.

Grocery shopping included buying a few ingredients for tomorrows ABC Radio segment. I already purchased a few different varieties of potatoes at the market in Canberra on Friday so I’m going to talk about the different types and their uses and cook a couple of dishes. Lots of people ask me about how to make the best mash (“like good restaurants make”) so I will make a mash and also some Colcannon. Colcannon is an Irish mash recipe that includes sautéed bacon and cabbage. My version has Brussels sprouts rather than cabbage and I will use some lovely streaky bacon from Pillagio in Canberra.  It’s a real winter accompaniment and I’ll serve it with some traditional pork sausages and thick gravy. Any dish that has bacon added must be good – dont you agree? Recipes will go on the Riverina Institute website tomorrow and ABC Riverina will also share the recipes and pics on their facebook page. Simon Wallace, who is the usual presenter is away this week, so I hope Ben enjoys it. Ben is the station manager and will fill in tomorrow, I think.

Tomorrow I will be going to work for the first time in about 7 or 8 weeks. I’m actually quite nervous. And a little bit excited to see my friends and catch up with everyone. And a little bit keen to get stuck into some work, I do like the brain stimulation and I love my job.

Will is leaving soon for Canberra. I know he will take good care of Dave and I’m really happy he is willing and able to do this. Before I left Canberra yesterday I put Dave’s medication for the week in a tablet organizer. He’s not great with remembering what he has to take when (Chemo brain) so I hope this helps.

Dave has his hematologist specialist appointment tomorrow afternoon. I think he will then organize some scans to see how the chemotherapy is working. Please keep praying everyone that the scans will show the chemo is sorting this cancer out.

P.S – The scarf story from yesterdays picture- well the quick version is that I leant over the stove to stir something and it caught alight. Whoops. Luckily I smelt it and put it out quickly! No smoke alarms went off thankfully 😉
