Fun in Queenstown

on

Today is the ‘fun’ day.

Every day has been really enjoyable with lots of great activities and experiences.

But today was simply about fun!

We woke reasonably early (I have barely seen it dark as the sun goes down so late and comes up so early!)

Breakfast was provided in the Air BnB. A range of cereals and Vogel seedy bread. I choose the low sugar option (There’s a story there that I may tell at some stage) of rolled oats and Dave stuck with his usual weetbix. I then prepared some toast – 2 slices, one for each of us. Which all sounds good until Dave looks at the remaining loaf of bread and asks whether I think it’s mouldy or not.

This comment was made AFTER I ate my slice. Hmmm. You know that sensation when you feel sick but not sure if it is in your head or real. I sat the remainder of the loaf outside our door on the verandah and then we got in the car and headed into Queenstown.

Queenstown is very touristy, but when you’re here you can really understand why. The crowds of tourists are all ages and a huge range of nationalities. There are so many things to do to suit all types and it was hard for us to choose what we would do.

Nothing is, however, very cheap. It’s not totally outrageous, but without much effort you can spend a fair bit of money. We did get a good deal on Viator for tickets up the Gondola (cable-car) which included 5 runs on the luge once you were at the top.

We got to the ticket station at the base before the queues got too long and only had to wait a few minutes to board the Gondola which took us quickly up the 450 meters to the viewing area. Wow – what amazing views…

We then caught a chairlift a little further up the mountain for our rides on the luge. So much fun! The other times I’ve been on a luge we have had the kids with us and they were at an age they needed watching – therefore this is the first time I’ve really been able to just concentrate on going as fast as I could!! Dave did pass me on one trip, and on the last trip I accidentally lost control on the last bend and there was a scream from the girl behind me, but we survived unscathed and pretty had-it from the pretty physical experience. (It’s hard work to hold the lever in just the right position to go flat out ?)

Next stop was a quick lunch (dumplings for me, Maccas for Dave) then we lined up for our life jackets to go on a Jet Boat. The K-Jet goes for an hour up both the Kawarau and Shotover rivers. I really loved this experience and only had to scream and shut my eyes a couple of times! The water was often only a few inches deep, but so clear and beautiful and again all the scenery was simply breathtaking!

The weather today is sunny and warm. A half hour stroll around ‘New World’ (remember when Coles was called Coles New World in Australia – not sure if there’s any connection) in the air conditioning was good. It’s so interesting to see what’s on the shelves in other countries! Dave bought some New Zealand made Whittaker’s Chocolates and Chocolate Milk and we also bought a couple of other things to eat in our room tonight rather than going out to dinner. I choose a pre-made lamb roast! Dave also got a single sultana scone!

This was the most interesting thing we saw in the supermarket – little clips to close up your fruit and veg bags. Dave often ties our bags in a knot when we select fruit or veg at the supermarket which slightly annoys me as you then often have trouble undoing the knot and end up ripping the bag – making it unable for re-use. If only we had these little tags in Australia ? After we eat or dinner we are going to wander down to the river that flows through this property. I am assuming it will be too cold for a swim ?‍♂️ but we may dip our feet in for a cool off before bed.

Tomorrow we will get up early for the long drive back to Christchurch. This holiday is going way to fast!
