Day 10 and 11: Colombo

on

After a swim and breakfast we packed our things and headed to reception to checkout and get a transfer to Colombo. I had booked the transfer online for a pretty good price so was a little anxious that it wouldn’t turn up.

A 10 seater air conditioned van did turn up, 10 minutes early in fact for the 1.5 hour drive to Colombo.

Every other day we had travelled on local roads with a maximum of one lane each way (some less ?) but today was mostly on a highway.

Unfortunately Dave is still unwell. Victoria is also a bit under the weather with a head cold ?. Poor Dave struggled with the drive, so as soon as we got to the apartment he went straight back to bed. We have a three bedroom apartment for 3 nights. We fly out after midnight on Monday night, so I booked the extra night so we had somewhere for our luggage and to have showers before going to the airport.

Will, Emma and I found a great Japanese restaurant only a few minutes walk away for dinner. It was in a trendy lane way filled with restaurants and bars. The sushi as particularly good ?.

We then had a couple of cocktails in one of the bars and listened to some live music. It was Saturday night after all 😉

Will and Emma explored the city a bit more but I headed for bed and 3 loads of washing! (The other reason I booked an apartment)

Today we started with breakfast at Cafe Francois, which was in the same lane way as the Japanese restaurant. I had a croque monsieur which was really tasty. Victoria, Emma and Will had freshly squeezed orange juice complete with a bamboo straw!I’m loving that Uber here has so many options including Uber Tuk Tuk. We ordered a couple from the cafe and headed to Pettah Markets. Each tuk tuk cost about $1.50, all charged to my Uber account without the stress of bartering for a price or having the right cash.

Pettah Market was fascinating. Lots of amazing fresh vegetables, fruit and meat. We also stopped and looked at the Red Mosque. Another Uber tuk tuk took us to a shopping centre. Not a very exciting one but it had clean toilets ? We had some Mexican for lunch then caught an Uber regular taxi back to check on Dave (still only $4 for a 10 min trip!)

There is a very large grocery store across from the apartment. We bought some snacks, drinks, milk, bread and eggs so I have just made Dave some scrambled eggs for dinner. It’s the first thing he has eaten for a couple of days… sipping flat lemonade is all he has managed. It’s absolutely pouring with rain so the rest of us might get something delivered via Uber eats for dinner. There’s about 500 restaurants to choose from, so it’s hard to know what to choose. Normally I like to see a restaurant and check out its cleanliness before I decide…

Poor Dave, that’s the pits! The mosque looks extraordinary.
